Identity Theft is on the rise and you need to do everything you can to try to keep your personal information intact and private.
Following are some tips to help you do just that.
Always shred financial documents and paperwork with personal information before you toss them in the trash. (This will also help with the environment as the shredded paper will disintegrate quicker!)
Don't carry your Social Security card in your wallet or have your social security card number on your checks. Most businesses do not need that information to provide credit to you.
Never give out personal information over the phone unless you've called the person and you know the company and person you are speaking with. The same goes for giving out information over the Internet or through the mail.
Never click on links sent in unsolicited e-mails; instead, type in an address you know, directly into the address line. Use firewalls, anti-virus and anti-spyware software to protect your home computer. Ad-ware is a Free program, but also has fee based programs with more features and benefits available. Check out OnGuardOnline.gov for more information.
Use a number/alpha password for increased safety on-line. Avoid using any obvious password like your birth date, mother's maiden name or last four digits of your Social Security number.
Keep your personal information in a secure place at home. That's especially important if you have roomates, employ outside help or are having work done in your home.
